Rad Bikes, 5th grade

The super rad Bike Paint by Christine Vineyard
Positive and negative spaces, using viewfinders, and creating compositions are some of my favorite things to teach, and when I found the painting below on Pinterest, I knew this theme would be a hit for me and my students. Everyone has been successful and the results are all unique and interesting. We talked about the different media artists choose and how they affect the look of an artwork - for example, how Sharpie is so much easier to control than watercolor, yet watercolor can create a certain mood. We began with paper viewfinders and contour drawings of bike silhouettes. Here are some of our results:

  1. Very very nice! I will certainly be borrowing this idea - can't think of a better subject matter either, it has appeal for everyone... Love it!

  3. These are all just FABULOUS. Can hardly wait to get out those viewfinders. By the way, I was stopped at a traffic signal yesterday and glanced at the Splendid clothing store window. They had brightly colored overlapping bicycle wheels in their window display. I thought of your first post on this lesson. If I'd had my camera with me I think I might have hopped out of the car to take a photo for kids to see!!!
