Calder style sculptures, 3 ways

Calder
Third graders have recently been looking at the works of American sculptor, Alexander Calder, and discussing 3-D form, color schemes, and abstract style.  Calder loved primary colors and black and white in his creations, often built with wire and painted metal and suggesting themes like "outer space" or "the circus." We tried 3 different techniques: the wire sculpture, the wall mobile, and the stabile sculpture.  Here are some of our results...

Hallway display case
bird from wire, pipe cleaners, buttons and beads

my teacher example of a wall mobile

a table full of stabile sculptures using painted yarn cones

wall mobiles standing in the back

wire bunny - love the placement of the buttons - skillful!

black background makes them pop!

an amazing kangaroo w/baby in pouch... really detailed

nice hanging wire sculptures

stabile with "SUN" theme

p.s. - Don't forget to go see "Picasso to Warhol" currently on display at the High museum, where you can experience several Calder sculptures in person!

  1. I am so jealous of your display cases! I wish I had a place to display 3D work... and more room to store in-progress projects so we could make more 3D work!

  2. We were thinking along the same lines. Our 5th graders just finished some Calder & Hundertwasser kinetic sculptures, too! http://kids-finelines.blogspot.com/2012/01/calderhundertwasser-results.html
    I love your cone bases!
