Japanese Project #2: Notan

Notan is a Japanese word meaning the balance between dark and light.  It is also an art form involving papercutting and postive and negative shapes.  Dolvin second graders continue our unit on Japanese art   with the creation of these beautifully balanced designs, while reviewing our knowledge of both geometric and organic shapes.

  1. I like the connection to Japanese art/Notan. I often use this project for positive/negative work - glad I can tie it into a cultural unit as well. Thanks for the tip!

  2. Thank you so much for this post! I did a very similar project with my 5th grade students but didn't know there was a cultural connection!
