Clay "sneaker charms"

Kindergarteners stamped out charms using the textured soles of their sneakers!  Each one was unique.
Next, we glazed the tops and strung beads, straws, and buttons.  The classes who finished these before the winter break turned them into ornaments, and those who had to wait until January (kiln repair issue!) made pendants. Thanks to Ms. Krass at Lake Forest Louvre for the idea of using the straws as spacers!

  1. Hiya, great blog. Texture is such a fun thing to teach, and kindergartners LOVE clay, lol. I plan on doing something similar with clay and texture, but we are going to study Jim Dine and create texture within a heart shape. If you have time, check out my blog: artmuse67@blogspot.com

  2. I did this with my 2nd grade students last year...they loved it!! When it came time for 2nd grade graduation, many wore them for the ceremony...it was a hoot to see them all dressed up with their clay shoe texture necklaces hanging around their necks. I enjoy your blog! Best, Vicki

  3. This post reminded me that I haven't done this yet this year! Such a fun easy project. We do it with air dry clay though (no kiln).

  4. Cool! I've done this lesson too - with older students. You can see them here:
