Free Art Friday

Dolvin artists will be participating in Free Art Friday for the first time on May 10, 2013! This is a worldwide art movement that celebrates the making and public sharing of handmade art objects, emphasizing that art is for everyone. The concept is simple - make a piece of art and display it in a public place (on a Friday) that will be easy for someone to come across - finders keepers! That is, for your first one - after that continue to share the pieces you find by placing them in public spots for others to enjoy. Remember, art pieces should leave no trace when taken - no tape, no signage, etc.

In the next two weeks, we will be producing some small pieces to give away on Fine Arts Night, May 9, and the following day students will display them at school and in the community for people to find and have their day brightened with art. This is Evereman, a local Free Art Friday artist who taught all of us Fulton county art teachers how to get in on this fun art movement for ourselves and our young artists

Here are some pieces we made at a production party - the abstract faces are called "Evereman" and the portrait is from another local artist, Ms. ATL. Some of these will be hidden around Dolvin on May 10!

Egyptian Self-portraits, 3rd grade

Our first Ancient civilization project is complete, which is the merging of self-portraits with the art of Ancient Egypt. We looked at examples of tomb painting, sculpture, hieroglyphics and architecture before we drew ourselves as if we were living in 3000 BC Egypt. The metallic paint pens and papers add a nice sparkle, although it is hard to see in these pics. Most of the figures we saw were in profile, but most of us opted for a more modern, forward facing approach. Thanks to Practical Pages for the Egyptian costume handout I found on Pinterest - it was a great visual aide. Next up, Ancient Greek figure pots!

We want to wish Ms. Murphy the best of luck as she moves on to the next level of her student teaching. We know you'll be great - thanks for all you did for us at Dolvin!
Also, our end-of-year art show and chorus concert, aka Fine Arts Night, is getting closer - May 9! Please mark your calendars to attend between 5:30-7:30 that evening. Every student will have their favorite piece of art on display, and Artome will again be on site if you would like to purchase the frame that is showcasing your child's art. Frame prices are $25 and our art department receives a portion of that money. All art will be returned to the students after the show. Looking forward to seeing you there!
