To celebrate 2017 as the Chinese New Year - Year of the Rooster, we made paintings using plastic forks instead of paintbrushes to create feathery textures. This idea came from the blog Kids Play Box.
K and 1 kids drew some simple shapes first and filled in with the fork painting, while the older kids made a few guidelines in pencil and worked mostly with the fork. We used detailing brushes for some of the tinier bits. I made handouts with information about roosters and some examples of roosters in art as well as their characteristics.
Hi Mrs. Knight, I LOVE these roosters and the use of a fork to paint features. Brilliant! I follow your blog and have used several of your ideas. Thank-you for sharing. I do have a question. What paper are you using? I can't seem to find a paper to use with either acrylic or tempera paint that doesn't curl when wet. I then have to "flatten" the paintings under books. Any advice would be appreciated. Marsha.......ivanym49@gmail.com
ReplyDeleteHi Marsha! I use a heavy white sulphite drawing paper from Blick. Sometimes it curls a bit too but not terribly. We didn't use any water in this lesson and that helped- it seems the more water you use, the worse curling you have. We just wiped our forks on a paper towel for cleaning. Good luck!
